Are You Traveling Without A Spare?

I remember when I still used disposable products I always had a tampon in my purse.
Especially when you don't use hormone based birth control it's often hard to predict the specific day your period will start.
After switching to cloth a few years ago I stopped carrying that spare tampon.
I am not sure why. I do remember being caught without protection somewhere away from home. Annoying! Uncomfortable! Embarrassing :(
And so after several years of this I had the brilliant idea to carry spares again!
I have an extra cup in the glove compartment in my car* and I carry an extra pad in a pad envelop in my purse. So nice to know that wherever I go, I have what I need. :)

our Lunette is made of the highest possible medical-grade silicone that can handle extreme temperatures. It has to, because it comes from Finland. And our winters are freezing!
It can also handle hot temperatures just fine. So you can store your Lunette in your car, don´t worry.

Ordering Special Edition Bamboo Velour Owl Pads

Monday, October 3rd will be the day we post our hand stamped and painted bamboo velour choices on Facebook!
There will be a total of 15 different fabric pieces for your consideration with 2 different owl motives.
It took me quite awhile to develop the perfect process for this. The stamps were made to use with paint but of course paint that would cover the fibers would affect the texture of the fabric so we had to think of a way to stamp with dye instead of paint. Unfortunately dye doesn't adhere to the stamps!
We had to come up with a carrier medium that would adhere to the stamps and accept the dyes. The image was left to dry and ironed. Afterwards a fine brush was used to fill in details and the fixative was painted over the image.
Normally dyed fabrics are immersed in the fixative but in the case of stamped images this would destroy the image and was not an acceptable solution.
Only after washing and drying the pieces can we be sure what the final result looks like.
Who would have thought that stamping an image onto fabric would turn out to be so time intensive?!
The way ordering will work is that you will order through our site Domino Pads and therefore choose your desired absorbency, etc. but you must reserve the piece of fabric you want in our Photo Album on Facebook.
The pictures will be posted October 3rd.

1. look through the photo album. The pictures will include info on colors as well as fabric size. Choose the appropriate fabric piece and 'claim' it by commenting. Every one listed is an OOAK (one of a kind)
2. order the pad you want made out of it (make sure size matches) and choose 'owl pad' in the drop down menu for bamboo velour patterns.
3. check out. Under your shipping info is a field for "special instructions'. Use this field to specify which piece of fabric you have reserved.
That's it!

This is a limited edition production. There are 15 pieces to be sold though the website/Facebook and 1 piece is being sold at auction on Hyenacart.

An Opportunity to Save

Have you noticed our pads go up in price with absorbency?
That is because we use bamboo blend fabrics for all soaker layers and the materials are expensive (but well worth it).
Here's a little secret though:
Compared to other brands we are generally very generous in what we label medium/heavy/etc. meaning compared to other brands you may get an extra layer and extra absorbency.
What does that mean to you?
If for example you have been successfully wearing a heavy absorbency pad in another brand, your best option when trying out Domino Pads may be to start with a medium absorbency pad in Domino Pads.
You will end up with a thinner pad at lower cost than if you simply shop by absorbency levels based on what you may have worn previously in other brands.
By the same token if you have never found a cloth pad that has had enough absorbency/capacity for you, we just may have the pad for you!

Confused By So Many Options?

With so many absorbency levels to choose from we thought it would be helpful to create a little guide!
We distinguish between liners and pads. Therefore petite liners, pantyliners and thong liners are intended for use on light days, slight discharge or as back up to cups.
They will most likely not be completely sufficient for moderate incontinence or heavier menstruation days.
While on first glance it looks like we offer simply 4 different absorbency levels in the pads we want you to be aware that you are actually also looking at two different designs. Pads without the 'extra' specification have the same absorbency level throughout the whole pad. Pads with the 'extra' specification have an additional layer of absorbent material directly in the center of the pad.
For example a heavy absorbency pad may be more appropriate (or vice versa) in some situations than a medium extra simple based on your specific flow pattern.
These vary by individual as well as situation:
Sitting all day in the office? A medium extra with extra absorbency right in the center and trimmer/thinner ends may be perfect!
Looking for a pad to sleep in? The heavy with equally strong absorbent layers front to back may be your best choice.

Design Change to Liners

Based on customer feedback we decided to make a small design change to the pantyliners and petite liners. You've asked for trimmer, thinner liners and here they are!

This design change affects only petite liners and pantyliners. Our thong liners are a different design all together and will not be affected by this change.
What in particular has changed?
Our pantyliners still consist of 1 top layer, 1 absorbent bamboo blend layer and 1 color coding layer to make it easy to tell all of your pads apart.
We have changed the type of bamboo blend layer we are using and also have chosen a different fabric for our color coding layer.
This change has resulted in a significantly thinner pad and we hope the new design finds your approval!

Red Eye - White Eye - do you know why it's important?

I wanted to share this adorable picture of baby Charlotte with you. Her mom, Sara, gave me permission to post it in hopes of spreading awareness of an easy to detect childhood cancer called Retinoblastoma. She wrote more about it here on her blog:

What makes this cancer different is that we have a tool in our homes that can detect a typical symptom early on: a camera!
Since the tumor is inside the eye it affects how light from the flash of a camera is reflected back in low light conditions. Normally we get that red-eye effect due to the blood vessels in the back of the eye. In an eye affected by Retinoblastoma however, that reflection in white.
Knowing this information you can easily detect by looking at Charlotte's picture, which eye is affected by Retinoblastoma and which eye is healthy.

On a technical note: some cameras digitally alter the color in a process called red-eye-reduction and pictures may appear to show white eyes due to that digital alteration. If your camera offers red-eye-reduction, please turn it off, if you are trying to take a picture for this purpose.

Book Review: Period. A Girl's Guide

If you have visited our restructured website recently you may have seen our book page. I am in the process of working my way through quite a few books on the subject of menstruation.
Funny how something we usually try not to think about too much can be so interesting once you pay attention to it!
I am starting my book review with a book aimed at young girls and her parents.
My own daughter is only 3 but we get quite a few inquiries for pad sets for teenagers.
And what a great idea! Why not start out with your very own set of beautiful, comfortable, reusable menstrual products.
So I started researching book for young girls on this topic and found my favorite in this one:
Period. A Girl’s Guide by JoAnn Loulan and Bonnie Worthern
The book itself is divided into two parts. The main part is the Girl’s Guide to Menstruation, the second part is the Parent’s Guide.
The Girl’s Guide includes illustrations and a glossary with pronunciation instructions. Right from the start the book puts great emphasis on how we are all different and that it is perfectly fine this way. The authors foster a positive body image without placing too much emphasis on external things.
The tone of the book is gentle and informative. It is not the funniest or most excitingly illustrated book I’ve ever read on the subject but what makes it more desirable to me than other books with the same target audience is that it completely leaves out sex education, giving the parent an opportunity to broach that subject on their own terms.
As you can imagine the chapter I am most critical about is the chapter on menstrual products. Of course the focus is on disposable materials. Worse though it starts of with a sanitary belt implying that ‘maybe your mother wore one, but most certainly your grandmother did’.
I think it’s time to edit that out of the next version. I am almost 40 years old and I am certain that not even my grandmother wore a sanitary belt.
It came as a pleasant surprise that the authors in fact did mention –ever so briefly- that some people preferred to use reusable pads and cups because they felt they were better for the environment and better for their bodies.
They also included some natural remedies to ease menstrual discomfort and a calendar section.
Despite its few shortcomings I found it to be the best book on menstruation for girls in that age range of 9 to 12 I have seen so far.
(I liked it so well I decided to offer it as an add-on option to our gift sets).

Excited about the new website design I have been playing around with the flower image. I ended up crafting some Domino Pads glass magnets and clearly I want to bestow these little glass pieces upon my Domino Pads customers!
I used really good magnets because I hate getting some promotional magnetic thing and it not holding even a postage stamp. Who wants to pick up stuff in front of the fridge all the time? So rest assured our Domino Pads glass magnets are unsurpassed as far as usability goes!
BUT: I know how it is with trying to avoid the accumulation of unnecessary stuff. I am giving you the option to opt out of freebies.
On our shopping site we have the 'Free with Purchase' section where you can select a free sample with your order (wipes, tea, soap or one of our new glass magnets). Now you can also choose the option 'Do not include any freebies' to specify that you not only don't want to pick a sample but also really do not wish to be surprised with any freebies in your package.

How did you become interested in cloth pads?

I think when people think about others using cloth pads the first thing that comes to mind is a dedication to the environment.
Of course that is a valid reason.

According to the last data I saw on this subject U.S. women landfill or incinerate 11.3 billion disposable menstrual products per year.

What many people are not aware of is that reusable menstrual products are not just better for the planet but also are more comfortable to wear. Many women report shorter, milder periods once they discontinue the use of disposable menstrual products that have been bleached and contain synthetic gelling crystals.

In fact that's how I came to use cloth pads. Six years ago shortly before my son, Duncan, was born I had collected a nice stash of cloth diapers for him. Duncan was our first child and much research went into how we wanted to welcome him into this world (he was born at home with midwives), how we wanted to raise him (practice attachment parenting) and what products we would want to use (environmentally friendly and safe for his body).

Duncan was born at home and while the birth was the wonderful experience we had been hoping for, the recovery was anything but. I had a small tear. Nothing major.

Duncan was a big baby at 23 inches and nearly 10 pounds. He was nursing for 45 minutes at a time with little breaks in between. We were still practicing our latch on so nursing laying down wasn't yet an option.

Sitting up was extremely painful though. I felt like the wimpiest new mother in the world. How could others give birth and immediately go back to normal activities when I was barely able to sit to nurse my child?

Then one day I decided to use the inserts I had made for Duncan (to protect his cloth diapers from meconium stains in the early days) as menstrual pads.

The difference was immediately noticeable. I felt so much better. The soreness was gone. It was fantastic.

For the next birth - my daughter, Annika - I used cloth pads exclusively and was finally able to really enjoy my babymoon, be back to normal activities within hours of her birth and not be miserable for weeks like I was after my first birth. It was so much more enjoyable!

I wish I had known that much of my postpartum discomfort after my first child was due to a sensitivity to the drying/gelling crystals in disposable menstrual products. I could have spared myself weeks of misery.

A lot of times when I tell people what I do for a living they view me as ueber-crunchy. How crazy do you have to be to want to wash and reuse menstrual pads? Sure they like to recycle and compost but having to deal with menstrual products is just a little more than what they want to to for the environment. In my opinion it's very possible that cloth pads are one of those 'green' things that makes your life easier and more comfortable though - just the opposite of the sacrifice people expect it to be.

Update: Turnaround Times

Domino Pads has grown over the last few years and now includes retail shops on 3 different continents! The order volume has increased so much that I had to hire helpers this year.
It's been wonderful to be able to share the opportunity of earning a small income from home with other women.

However just due to logistics of coordinating with another person rather than doing it all myself in house we will have to adjust our turnaround times slightly. Our new turnaround estimates on orders are as follows:

Since our pads are highly customizable they are made to order. Turnaround time is generally 10 days or less.

I will send you an email notification, before I ship, with tracking info. If you do not hear from me within 10 days of ordering, please contact me. Please allow more time for larger wholesale orders - approximately 3-4 weeks.

My little guy turned 5! In many ways life before kids seems like an eternity ago. But I remember how anxiously we were awaiting his arrival and I can't believe my baby is now this tall little boy with big plans and ideas.

Size Comparison

Last year I did my own comparison on the Diva cup versus Lunette (you can see that one here)

Today I wanted to show a picture comparison of the sizes:

You will notice I only have a picture of the larger Diva cup.
According to the Diva website both the Model 1 and Model 2 Diva cups are 57 mm tall and differ in diameter only.

for the Diva the sizing is:

The Model 1 cup is 1 11/16" (~4.3 cm or 43 mm) in diameter and the Model 2 cup is 1 13/16" (~4.6 cm or 46mm) in diameter. Both cups are approximately 2 1/4" (~5.7 cm or 57mm) in length in the body of the cup, with another 3/8" (~1 cm) stem (2 5/8" total length). The stem may be trimmed to adjust for comfort.

for the Lunette the sizing is:

Just Perfect The Way It Is

Lately I've been working on rearranging the sewing room. I was even considering adding a TV to keep me company at night. Then I realized I already have everything I need right there.
It's still cool enough to leave the window open in the sewing room and as I was listening to the sounds outside, I was reminded how lucky I am.
It was late evening and the horses enjoyed the slight breeze, their grazing interrupted by wild chases amongst the trees. I love the sound of hooves thundering past my sewing room window.
As night fell the horses settled down and went back to the barn.
Their sounds were replaced with the chirping of the crickets in the trees and the hooting of an owl.
Sometimes I can hear the wild turkeys in the morning or the howls of coyotes in the distance at night.
And then it seems just perfect the way it is without a TV -so quiet and yet so full of sound. :)

It measures a whopping 15 inches long with most of the width and length located towards the back portion of the pad. It is shown here in our new Minkee color choice Aqua Sea. For 2011: Design Change on Medium Absorbency Pads

For the new year we are starting off with a small design change to the medium absorbency pads. Previously medium absorbency pads were almost as thick as our heavy absorbency pads.
We have been working on a pad design that more clearly puts the medium absorbency pad between the pantyliner and the heavy absorbency pad.
The new design sports the same absorption capacity as before but with a lower profile. A super absorbent - but very thin- bamboo blend goes all the way from one end of the pad to the other. The center third of the pad has an extra layer to handle more moisture in the middle.

The new medium absorbency pad fits great even under very fitted clothing. Testers have responded very positively to the design change. I hope you will like it too! :)

Don't Pull Your Pad's Life Short

While it is technically possible to fold the pads into themselves and create a neat little package by snapping them packaged like that, we just wanted to mention that we do NOT recommend this.
On first glance this may seem like a great idea to keep a soiled pad. It can however affect your pad's lifespan in a negative way:
* will stretch the fleece liner sideways and widen it over time. Your pad will be more prone to shifting
* will stretch the needle holes and weave. Your pad will be more prone to leakage

Due to the breathable design of the pad moisture can also be pushed through the pad and still soil whatever you keep it in under the pressure of having it folded and snapped that way.

The best way to transport your soiled pads is of course to put them in a moisture-proof container such as our batik wetbags. If you are on a budget even our reusable sandwich bags would work well! Feel free to fold them, roll them, etc.
Just don't fold and snap them if you want to keep them working and looking like new for a long time.

One of my main goals this month was to make a dress myself from a pattern. I found the perfect pattern - a reprint of a vintage pattern from 1947 and the perfect fabric - a beautiful celery green polka dot cotton blend.
Once I opened the pattern envelop though I quickly realized this would be more complicated than I thought. I briefly considered mailing the fabric and pattern to Heather who makes the gorgeous batik wetbags for Domino Pads and also offers vintage style handmade dresses but with the encouragement of some friends I tackled this project anyway.
I am so glad I did! I think it turned out great and I am already planning another one for Spring.

One of my friends is vegan and for her birthday her wish was that everybody make it a meatfree day that day.
I've always thought about becoming vegetarian but it seemed too final and I couldn't stick with it for long. I LOVE animals but I still always liked to eat them.

I liked the idea of having meat free days though (since it was less strict and final than becoming vegetarian) and so for her birthday I started going meat-free. I planned so much that I actually ended up with lots of yummy meat free meal ideas so I just kept going. I tried some interesting things on the vegan side as well such as nut cheese!

After a couple of weeks I noticed that my arthritis was much less bothersome on the meat-free diet so I continued to avoid meat. I started losing weight and gaining energy. The accumulation of really tasty alternatives, health benefits and love for animals made it easy to stick with it.

I still don't want to call myself vegetarian because it sounds so final but I can't remember the last time I ate meat.

Then I found out meatless is also fantastic for the environment!

Ditching the Diva

When I purchased my first reusable menstrual cup – a Diva- 4 years ago I thought it was fantastic. Unfortunately though after the second baby it really didn’t seem to be such a good fit anymore.

Extra insurance by wearing pads was definitely required. Not a big problem since as the maker of Domino Pads I have easy access to an awesome stash of pads.

For the past couple of years I heard good reviews about a new cup -the Lunette from Finland- and was curious to try it.
I was pretty excited when I got my new Lunette in its pretty little box and gorgeous sunshine yellow satin pouch.

In the size 2 one major difference I could see right away was the firmness of the silicone. The Lunette was much firmer. I thought right away 'Oh no! Softer is better. I won't like this...' but guess what!

Firmer can be better. What does it do in the case of a larger size cup? It opens up much easier.

Gone are the times of spinning the Diva around numerous times to finally get it to unfold and provide a secure fit.

The Lunette opens up for me in just a quarter turn. Voila!

I don't wear a size one but I also checked out the small Lunette and it's made with a softer silicone which is a really good match for the smaller cup.

The next noticable difference is the stem. While the Diva has a shorter round stem the Lunette has a longer soft, flat stem. Again since I sometimes found the Diva stem bothersome I thought a longer stem would be even worse but the design actually turned out to be more comfortable. The flat stem of the Lunette seems to bend and conform much more easily than the more rigid round stem of the Diva. Another point for the Lunette!

One of the things I really enjoy about it right now though is completely unrelated to the design: it's the yummy smelling liquid wash they offer to clean the cup. I am in love with the light lemon/eucalyptus scent and wouldn't mind using it as a shampoo! I foresee a batch of lemon/eucalyptus shampoo bars in my future...

All of the ingredients seem reasonable as well -basically coconut oil based soap with essential oils. I give the wash liquid another thumbs up. :)

I haven't tried the disposable wipes yet, as we generally stay close enough to home to not need to empty the cup on the go but they are biodegradable as well.

All in all in my Diva - Lunette comparison I didn't really find any draw backs to the Lunette and I did enjoy several advantages. Does it solve all of my concerns I had with the Diva?

Not completely. I still like to wear a back up pantyliner because at times I do get a little leakage. Nothing major and I might just have to reread my previous blog post ' Hold The Kegels' to get some ideas on strengthening my pelvic muscles. ;)

Hold The Kegels!

I know many of our customers use Domino Pads not just for their period but also for incontinence so I wanted to briefly touch on this subject.
You've probably seen the suggestions for Kegel exercises. Hardly any pregnancy book is without it.
You are urged to do them even more later on especially if you are experiencing any form of incontinence. Kegels seem to be the answer to everything!
Help I pee when I sneeze/run/laugh - do Kegels!
Help my reusable menstrual cup is suddenly more leak prone - do Kegels!
How super frustrating it is though when you do those Kegels and nothing improves.
Outsiders offering advice on discussion boards and forums are quick to say you are not doing them enough or you are not doing them right or else - of course- the Kegels would have shown results.

If Kegel exercise could be measured in miles I probably have already kegeled my way around the world!

A few months back I came across a blog post about this very subject and instantly felt excited about it.
Yes sure the woman is also selling an exercise DVD so that's always a little suspicious but I strongly felt she had some really good points about the cons (yes cons!) of Kegel exercise and ideas about alternatives.

With the start of the new year we just introduced a new pad liner design!
The new design features a thin woven strip of fabric to reinforce the wings, making them less prone to stretching over time.

Of course the original fleece only design is still available as well.

Lots of exciting changes at Domino Pads!

1. Based on customer feedback I have slightly adjusted the sizing on the petite size pads. They are now approximately 2.5" wide instead of the standard 3". (I am 5'10" so I really rely on customer input on this one. Suggestions are always welcome!)

2. We now also offer the LONG pads in light and medium absorbencies to accommodate customers that might find the regular pantyliners and regular pads do not give them enough coverage - check out our new Plus Size Section!

The technique I use for these is called Low Water Immersion Dyeing. It yields a very varied and interesting pattern. Each piece is unique and exact colors will not only differ slightly from batch to batch but also within the same piece of fabric.

Natural, un-dyed pads are still available as well.

Easy Way to Make Reusable Swiffer Pads

1.Get a package of microfiber towels. You can find these in the automotive section of most stores. They are made of 80% Polyester and 20% Polyamide.

2. If you are using a green Swiffer (dry) all you have to do is trim the towels to fit your swiffer and stick the ends into the holes on top. You can serge it if you like but microfiber generally does not fray.

3. If you are using the purple Swiffer (wet) all you have to do is tri-fold the towels and sew a few lines across to turn the towel into a pad. I do two rows lengthwise and 3 across.

You won't need many rows - just enough to keep the pad stable once it gets wet.
The purple Swiffers have velcro on the bottom that sticks perfectly to your microfiber pad and will hold it in place without you having to sew velcro to your pad itself.

It takes less than a minute to make the wet pads and will be a big money saver if you have laminate or tile floors and swiffer a lot. The microfiber attracts dust and hair when dry and when wet mopping is very absorbent. It also is easy to wash and quick to dry. A very economical solution to reduce waste and save money!

Depending on your floor it may take a little more 'push' to wet mop with this pad. I have found no difference on my ceramic tile floor but I have to push a little harder on my laminate floor. On the plus side though the disposables never got my laminate clean. As soon as it dried I could see little greasy hand prints again! With the microfiber pads I get it clean in one swoop. :)

The pads can then go in the washer and dryer to be used again.

Organic Cotton - What's the Deal?

It's sort of easy to see why organically grown fruits and veggies can have an impact on us. But cotton? What's the deal with cotton. It's not like we eat it!

I try to use organic cotton in my products as much as possible. All of my cloth pads (aka mama pads) are made with Bamboo/Organic Cotton blends. My cloth baby wipes / family cloth is made from 55% hemp/ 45% organic cotton fleece.

But since you don't eat it why should it matter?

I found a great site : The Pesticide Action Network of North America - PANNA

According to PANNA conventional cotton is the most pesticide intensive crop grown:

Conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides than any other single
crop and epitomizes the worst effects of chemically dependent agriculture.
Each year cotton producers around the world use nearly $2.6 billion worth of
pesticides -- more than 10% of the world's pesticides and nearly 25% of the
world's insecticides.
Cotton growers typically use many of the most hazardous
pesticides on the market including aldicarb, phorate, methamidophos and
endosulfan. Cotton pesticides are often broad spectrum organophosphates--pesticides originally developed as toxic nerve agents during World War II--and carbamate pesticides.
Pesticides used on cotton-even when used according to instructions-harm people, wildlife and the environment.
These pesticides can poison farm workers, drift into
neighboring communities, contaminate ground and surface water and kill
beneficial insects and soil micro-organisms.

Obviously it's not always possible to get organic cotton but I do whenever I can. Our family cloth/ baby wipes are all made with 55% hemp/ 45% organic cotton and the bamboo blends I use in our Domino Pads all have organic cotton as the second component (after bamboo).
